Come, let's dance like children of the Côte de Nuits!
About the Design: Burgundy, France has 5 main grape growing areas: Côte de Beaune, Chablis, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais & Côte de Nuits. Among these 5 primary regions, there are 33 Grand Cru vineyards (the highest tier in France), 24 of which are located in the Côte de Nuits region. Côte de Nuits mean "The Night Slope" in French.
Within Côte de Nuits, there is a small commune called Vosne-La Romanée. Within this village there are 6 Grand Cru vineyard sites, one of which is La Romanée, the smallest AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) in France at just 0.8 hectares (1.98 acres).
Above La Romanée is the 4.47 acre plot of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. This monopole (vineyard controlled by a single winery) makes less than 500 cases of Pinot Noir a year. Due to the small size & prestige, these wines are among some of the most expensive bottles in the world. In fact, the 3rd most expensive bottle ever sold at auction was a 1945 vintage of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that went for $558,000 in the fall of 2018.
